Nightmare Before Christmas Pizza Dip

Nightmare Before Christmas Pizza Dip

Yield: 4 servings

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Pizza sauce, pepperoni, ricotta cheese and black olives make up this fun Nightmare Before Christmas Pizza Dip for Halloween or anytime of year!

Ingredients

• 3 cups pizza sauce
• 10 pepperonis
• 2 cups ricotta cheese
• 3 black olives; for the face

Instructions

Warm spaghetti sauce for 2 minutes in the microwave. Place it at the bottom of a medium bowl.

Chop up pepperoni and add in diced pepperonis.

Warm ricotta cheese in the microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. Spoon ricotta into bowl and smooth out the top.

Cut one olive in half to make the eyes for Jack. Slice the rest of the second and third olive to make the mouth and nose.

Serve warm

Sometimes I feel like little ones get left out of the planning when it comes to drinks for a party, especially fun and exciting drinks that you might make for a Halloween party.  All of the bells and whistles come out for cocktails for Halloween but what about the kids? Normally it’s just water, juice or soda….right?

I’ve seen Creepy Eyeball Martinis and Liquid Ghost Halloween Cocktails but drink options for kids at parties sometimes seems a little flat. That is until these Little Monster Halloween Mocktails showed up!

If you’ve read my food blog, BigBearsWife.com you have probably noticed that when Halloween comes around, there is a bit of a Nightmare Before Christmas theme happening! I mean after all I did make Jack Skellington Apples, I’ve made Jack Skellington Oreos, I’ve decorated the house in a The Nightmare Before Christmas theme and our pumpkins have even been carved as Jack and Sally before!

So what else did I need to add the “Nightmare Before Christmas” touches to the house? Why I needed Sally’s Potion Bottles of course!

Sally uses these potions when she makes soup for Dr. Finkelstein in the movie! The Deadly Night Shade puts him to sleep so that she can sneak out

Now I’ve got my own Worms Wort, Frog’s Breath, and Deadly Night Shade! Oh did you want your own bottles too? Good! I’ll show you how I made mine!

Stick the label onto the first bottle!

Let dry!

Repeat these steps for the other two bottles!

Ahhh they’re just perfect for my coffee table, don’t you think?!!

and Frog’s Breath….. there’s nothing more suspicious than Frog’s Breath!

Oh and what completes the display of Sally’s Potion Bottles? Why it’s Sally’s spoon! In the movie, Sally used a spoon with holes in it to “taste” the soup to show Dr. Finkelstein that she didn’t poison it! Haha little does he know that she’s using the spoon with holes for the taste test!

Even though we’ve already gone to Disney World and traveled back home I’m still counting down to the Halloween Party in my head.  It’s so weird. I guess because the whole reason for the trip was for the Disney Halloween Party and since we didn’t get to go to it, I’m like still waiting for the party…even though I know good and well that it isn’t happening.  I guess that’s what happens when you spend 6-8 months planning for something and poof it just doesn’t happen.

I mean y’all….I’m to the point where I see something that’s Disney and I smile and then it turns into “I don’t even want to see that Disney stuff!” — Y’all KNOW that’s not me. haha what’s wrong with me. I’m like totally holding a grudge and I’m not meaning too. haha

I guess I just need to plan another trip or another event to take my mind off of it and look forward to something else. haha

But ANYWAYS!

I had put together this DIY Ursula Costume for the Disney‘s party and even though I don’t have any photo from Disney with the Ursula Costume on, I did take a few snapshots. Mainly because after spending months collecting the perfect pieces, I just wanted to actually be able to wear it for a minute and because I wanted to post it on the blog.

I love “pieced together” costumes so much better than ones you can buy from the store. I love the personal touches, I love searching for matching theme pieces and I love the final results.

It’s so much fun to put together a costume that isn’t really going to look like everyone else’….plus….I’m not into the super hoochie slutty costumes that are at a lot of the stores. No Thank You!

So THIS is my Ursula Costume DIY Tutorial for my version of a DIY Ursula Costume!

So this is what I used and where I got it!

Let’s start from top to bottom!

Mouse Ears

The ears…..oh those Ursula Mouse Ears! I made those and I put a photo, step by step tutorial on the blog for them.  They’re pretty easy to make and I may or may not be obsessed with making mouse ears now. Shhh, don’t tell anyone though because that makes me sound like a weirdo.  Those were actually the first pair I ever made so they’re not 100% perfect but I love them. I’m getting better at them now though.

Perhaps I should start selling them on Etsy? Maybe. We’ll see.

If you don’t want to make your own though, it looks like you can find tons of custom mouse ears on Etsy; just search for “Ursula Mouse Ears” and you’ll find a bunch to buy.

No, your Ursula doesn’t need mouse ears. I made mouse ears because I was supposed to wear this to the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Disney World. You can totally do this without them.

Hair

No, that’s not my hair. haha. It’s a wig.   I know that Ursula has super short hair but I HATE myself with super short hair, so I went with a longer hair style because that’s what I like. I found this wig at the Spirit Halloween store BUT also found the exact one at Walmart a few weeks later for a lot less money.

I also found the same wig I bought on Amazon. But trust me, go look at the photo so you know what wig to look for and then go get it from Walmart. It’s like $6 at our Walmart and I paid $20. That’s what I get for not looking around.

However, you can also just go with the regular Ursula style wig if you want. I know you can find those online too.

Make -Up

For my makeup, I just did my regular makeup but switched out my normal eyeshadow for a purple and silver. I also put my eye shadow on a lot heavier than I normally would.  I also used a red color lipstick because we all know that Ursula loves her red lipstick!

I didn’t paint my body blue/purple like some makeup tutorials because I’m not about that life. hahaha Well, no, it’s really because I didn’t want to spend hours washing blue/purple make up off of my face and arms. No thank you.

You can also add Ursula’s beauty mark on your chin with an eyeliner pen. I tried it for my look and it looked weird so I took it off.

Earrings

The earrings were probably one of my favorite pieces of this costume other than the mouse ears.

I bought these Ursula Fake Gauges from JuneTiger on Etsy!

She makes Tentacle Gauges too but since my ears are not stretched, I choose the “fake gauge” earrings.

They hook just like regular earrings and they’re made out of clay.

I think that they’re absolutely adorable and I’m debating on if I can get away with wearing them with a normal everyday outfit haha.

Necklace

I found this shell necklace at Hot Topic for like $6 in the clearance section. However, I just checked and it looks like you can find the same Ursula Shell necklace on the Hot Topic website. 

Ursula NEEDS her shell necklace, so don’t forget it!

If you’re looking for a bigger option, Etsy has some fun ones as well. 

Dress/Apron

YES! You read that right! The main part of my costume is an apron!

I’m so in love with it!

I bought this Ursula apron from AJsCafe on Etsy!  I LOVE it! Ok, I think I already said that but I really do.  Not only was it PERFECT for my costume  but HELLO, it’s an apron! So once Halloween is over, it’s going to hang in my kitchen. I love it when a costume looks wonderful but can also be broken down and used in real life after Halloween.

She has a TON of Disney Character themed aprons too. So, even if you’re not into being Ursula for Halloween you should still check out her shop because she does amazing work.

I even sent her my measurements to make sure that the tie would be long enough for me and she made sure that everything would fit.

Now this is a wrap-around apron, so it does cover the font as well as your butt, however, the back is exposed. I just wore a black tank top and black Capri leggings under it!

Boo to YOU, Happy Halloween!

It’s HERE! Halloween is here!! I’m so in love with this day! I’m determined not to lose the magic of things like Halloween as I grow older! I may not have kids (yet) but I still don’t want to give up that magic! So I will continue to dress up each Halloween and embrace it each and every year!

Now in the past, my costumes have always been “dark”….except for one year I was a Sailor Girl and felt totally weird as the “sexy costumes” are just NOT for me! When I was growing up I was ALWAYS a witch or a vampire! At least my parents didn’t have to spend a fortune on costumes since I re-used the same one over and over! haha

This year, however, I embraced my Disney Side! Any Guesses? haha Um yeah, that was probably a dumb question… I know. haha.

So I am NOT one of those people that’s willing to spend $50-$80 on some costume that has less fabric than a baby bodysuit, so I try to “make” my own with what I have at home!

This is how I did my Minnie Mouse Costume this year!

Here is my whole Costume, ok not the best picture of the whole costume but it will do.

Let’s start from the top to the bottom. This costume is so ridiculously easy!

These Minnie ears are from my trip to Disney a year or so ago. BUT if you don’t have Minnie ears all you need to do it buy a black headband, cut out two black circles from cardstock and then clue (hot glue) the ears and a red bow to the black headband.

For my makeup today I just put on my normal makeup but I used a few extra coats of my 3D Fiberlash‬ Mascara on and then painted my nose with some black Halloween Makeup that I got from Target. I also put a little white “shine line” on one side of my nose to give it a “cartoon look” BUT the white didn’t show up too well. Oh well!

Next, I wore this cute chunky bead Minnie Mouse Necklace that I bought from Rainbow Sparkle Necklaces! I’m 100% in LOVE with this necklace.

For my “Minnie Skin” haha, I just wore a black shirt, black capri yoga pants (rolled up) and black tights. Then I tied a Minnie Mouse apron on! Now I have my Minnie Mouse apron from my trip to Food Blog Forum (Disney gave them too us)

BUT if you can’t fine one that looks like this just use a red apron and glue white card stock circles onto it! (That’s what I would have done If I didn’t have this one!)

And then for the shoes!! Ok, I HATE the color yellow so there was no way in heck I was going to spend a lot of money on yellow shoes for this Minnie costume that I would never wear again!

I took a trip to Goodwill and found these brown shoes for $3. BigBear Spray Painted them yellow for me and I hot glued some red glitter Christmas bow (they are actually ornaments haha) onto the tops of the shoes!

Now I will tell you that you may want to get some kind of special paint or shoes that won’t bend much if you’re planning on keeping these yellow shoes. The ones I bought are “leather” like and the paint is starting to crack where they bend. I’m totally find with it though because I’ll never wear them again after today but just wanted to let you know.

So that’s my Halloween Costume this year! See ladies… no need to dress up like a hoe  um…. I mean a um…. um…………no need to dress up in a costume that shows more skin than the day you were born!

It’s possible to have a cute costume, save some money and stay warm all while keeping your dignity! haha

If you know me at all you KNOW that I LOVE the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas“. I mean I really, really love it. I actually watch it at least twice a week. I have my tablet set up in the kitchen with speakers and that movie is on while I’m baking and cooking (I switch between that and Alice in Wonderland). It’s my “cooking movie” haha.

I don’t know why I love it so much, but I just do. Side note — if you want to win my heart forever, get me or make me a The Nightmare Before Christmas birthday cake! Really, that’s how much I love it. haha. It probably goes hand in hand with my love of Halloween.

Speaking of Halloween, it’s almost here!!! Only a few more days! So I’ve got something special for you! Amazingly super easy, Jack Skellington Oreo Pops!! Jack Skellington, please tell me that you know who Jack Skellington is! If you don’t I just don’t feel like we can be friends….

If you need a refresher, Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King! He’s the main character in “The Nightmare Before Christmas” aka the best movie ever. OK well maybe not the BEST movie ever but it’s on up there for me.

Last year Karyn from Pint Sized Baker made these Jack Skellington Cake Pops and I just loved them! I wanted to make them for our Halloween Party this year and wanted to make a batch for #SundaySupper but since I was being lazy  am being super awesome on my Clean Eating Challenge, I thought that having a bunch of cake pops around wasn’t such a good idea. Humm… what else is round? The dang Halloween Oreos that I’ve been eyeing on the top of my refrigerator haha.

Those will work! So with inspiration from my favorite movie and Karyn from Pint Sized Baker, I give you Jack Skellington Oreo Pops!!

UPDATE! I know a lot of people are having trouble with the Wilton markers, they use to work wonders but the past few packs I’ve bought have been dried out. I recently switched to these AmeriColor Black Edible Markers and I love them!

You should be able to find the Americolor pens at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and maybe even Walmart.

Another Tip! My Friend Kayrn made Jack Cake pops and she used Black Cookie Icing for her faces! That might work here too!

It’s no secret that this time of year is my favorite! I know you’ve seen the Halloween posts around here lately and last year I even shared some of my “Witch Themed” decorations at the house!

This year I did things a little differently and decided that I wanted to do a “Nightmare Before Christmas” theme at the house for Halloween!

If you don’t know about the Nightmare Before Christmas you are totally missing out! It’s just awesome and it’s pretty much my favorite movie!

I just can’t get enough of Jack Skellington and his spooky friends from Halloween town!

Even my niece and god-daughters know that it’s my “cooking movie”! haha I have a little stand in my kitchen that holds my tablet and when I’m cooking or developing recipes I always have this movie on in the background. ALWAYS! lol

Oh and there on the left, that’s Oogie Boogie from the movie! He’s hanging out in the dining room/kitchen for now.. probably whipping up a batch of snake and spider stew.  

It’s just black card stock that I cut out into shapes but I love it!

I also made a Nightmare Before Christmas wreath for the front door.  I’m thinking about giving the wreath it’s own post and showing you all what I used to make it but I’m not sure yet. What do you think? Should I make another post dedicated to the Nightmare Before Christmas deco mesh wreath that I made?

Here is the whole wreath that’s on the front door.

I made Jack out of dura foam styrofoam type balls and just drew his face on with a black sharpie. I went with the black, green and purple color scheme for Halloween and threw in a few pumpkins for “The Pumpkin King”.

I also added a little Christmas tree to represent the “Christmas” part of the movie! haha

Oh and I did make some “potion” bottles from the movie as well to decorate the coffee table in the living room! I wrote a post on how I make Sally’s potion bottles here. 

Now onto these apples! haha!

These apples came about because,  #1 I love the movie and #2 because I love the Jack Skellington Chocolate Apples that Disney makes every year for Halloween! After all, not only am I obsessed with Jack, I’m also obsessed with Disney!

We spent 3 wonderful days down in Disney World but Hurricane Matthew drove us back up north.  We were supposed to go to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party last night but when were were supposed to be at the party we were half way home to Virginia trying to beat the storm. They cancelled the Halloween party at Disney and closed the parks today. We were supposed to be there until Saturday but with the Hurricane on it’s way, with sad hearts, we packed our bags and cut our trip short.

So no Halloween Party this year, which broke my heart, but Thankfully we made it out of Orlando safe and sound!

Today I was supposed to tell you how amazing our night was at the Halloween Party. I was supposed to be able to tell you how I met Jack and Sally in the Magic Kingdom and how we had the best time. I was suppose to be able to tell you about how amazing the parade was and how the Hocus Pocus show blew me away. But those things just didn’t get to happen.  I am so grateful that we were able to make it make home safe with everyone that was evacuating  but I still have to say that I’m pretty sad about it.

You know how much it meant to me to be at Disney for our first Halloween celebration.

However, I’m trying to keep my head up. I’m trying to just remind myself that we are safe and that’s what’s important. We can always try again next year.

So, to mend my broken heart, I’m going to share something super special because I couldn’t have a Disney Halloween themed week on the blog without Jack Skellington!!

Monday we started the week off with Mickey Pumpkin Marshmallow Cereal Treats.

Wednesday I taught y’all how to make Halloween Mouse Ears with my DIY Ursula Mouse Ears Tutorial.

Today I’ve got Jack Skellington Macarons for you!!

Thomas and I were sitting around the other night trying to think of something for me to make for the last “Disney Themed” treat for this week and I was scrolling through my Jack Skellington Oreos Pops when the idea hit me.

I knew I had to make something with Jack but needed to make some type of round treat in order for that to work. After looking at my Oreo pops I thought of macarons!

I love macarons and I knew that they would be perfect little Jack Skellington desserts! There was only one problem. I had never made macrons and I was scared.

I had eaten quite a few macarons haha but I had never attempted them. I had heard horror stories about people making them at home. I had heard bakers say that it took years to master the art of macarons making and that one would need to practice over and over and over before they even got the first decent batch.

I have literally been watching macaron making videos over and over for like the past year.

I told Thomas that I was nervous. He told me that I might as well get it over with and give it a try. haha

I did. Oh I did and guess what! Macarons, while a tad bit picky, aren’t actually that hard to make.

Let me tell you something, if you can make meringue cookies, you can make macarons!

No, I didn’t get them perfect on the first try. I even failed on the second try. (aka I burnt them haha)

But oh my, the third time was a charm, so I’m going to tell you what I learned during the process.

Let me start off with the recipe I used – well the recipe I used and changed up just a tad since I was making Jack macarons.

I used the recipe that Carrie from Bakeaholic Mama used for her Pumpkin Pie Macarons… but you know… minus the orange and pumpkin haha.

Here are some the things I learned while making these:

Almond meal and Almond flour are kind of different, well around here they are anyways.

–When I first went to make these, I bought almond meal because almost all of the recipes I found called for it. I went home, ran it through the sifter/sieve like I was supposed to. It had little brown pieces in it from the almond skins (I guess you call it skin). Maybe that doesn’t normally matter but I wanted these Jack Macarons to be perfectly white, so those pieces of brown almond has to go. So my first batch of Jack Macarons were tasty but they had freckles haha.

I have freckles, Jack does not.

I found this almond flour at Walmart and it did much, much better!

Also, my first batch of macarons was not as smooth as I wanted them to be. I wanted the smooth top for the macarons and my first batch, while tasty, was a little bumpy and grainy looking.

That was not what I was going for.

Also, even though I had used white food coloring, they weren’t super white but more like a dull whiteish color. womp womp.

The second attempt was going well at first. I colored them just right, once I pipped them they had that super smooth top and I let them rest for an hour instead of 30 minutes before baking.

I just knew that these were going to be winners.

I popped them into the oven, put a wooden spoon into the door (Carrie’s suggestion), set my timer and waited.

When the timer went off I jumped up to retrieve my precious while macrons only to be greeted with burnt rust colored, hard as a rock macarons. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I was so sad. Those were supposed to be perfect.

With a second macaron failure under my belt I set out for the third batch.

Which turned out to be perfect.

I used a lot more white food coloring and I folded the batter a bit more than before.

My tip for the batter – fold the almond flour sugar mixture into the whipped egg whites, slowly. But keep folding. Keep folding until you can drizzle some of the batter with a spatula back into the bowl and it starts to “melt into” the batter in the bowl. You don’t want to over mix but you don’t want to under mix either.

Make sure you let them rest for at least an hour before you bake them. Don’t rush them.

Then for the faces! You can’t make Jack Skellington Macarons without Jack’s face!

For Jack’s face I used one of these black, AmeriColor Gourmet Writer edible food coloring pens. I’ve used other edible pen markers before but these always seem to do the best.

Make sure you let those macarons dry completely before you attempt to make these faces.  I let mine sit overnight before I filled them or drew on the faces.

BE GENTLE! You’ve GOT to use a light hand to draw these faces or you’re going to crack your Jacks! You barely need any pressure to write with these edible pens so be careful.

Also, one last tip. I filled these with a homemade chocolate ganache but you can use any type of filling you want.  However, I do say this….make sure the filling is soft! You don’t want to have to really push down really hard with these when you’re making them into a sandwich because they will crack.

These macarons are wonderful but they’re delicate.
